Around 8000 years ago, the city was believed to be the home of the Harappans. The site of modern-day Chandigarh was formerly a large lake surrounded by marshlands. Many fossil remains, mostly of aquatic creatures and amphibians, have been unearthed in the region.

During the mediaeval era, the city was part of the affluent Punjab region. Punjab was divided into East and West Punjab after the tragic partition of the country in 1947. The city was intended to house refugees who had been displaced from West Punjab, as well as serve as the capital of East Punjab.  Chandigarh tourist places
